This map shows people living in territories at war between 1945 and 2004. Years when a territory was been war free are not shown. In the average year during this period 2.8 billion people were living in territories at war for part or all of that time. India accounts for 29% of these people, China for 20%.

Between 1945 and 2004 on average territories had 48 peaceful years. Myanmar (known as Burma for much of this time) had none. The United Kingdom only had 4 war free years. 22 territories avoided war for all 60 years. The majority of the population in each territory has had very little influence on decisions to go to war.

"I am convinced now ... that the lives of Congolese people no longer mean anything to anybody. Not to those who kill us like flies, our brothers who help kill us or those you call the international community ..." Salvatore Bulamuzi, 2003

Territory size shows the proportion of people worldwide living in territories not free of war, for the years 1945 to 2004.
